On this day in 1982 in Des Moines, Iowa, one unlucky bat met [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ozzy Osbourne[/lastfm] for the first and last time.
Ozzy was on tour promoting Diary Of A Madman and was known for catapulting meat into the audience. Once the word got out, fans started bringing their own meat to the venues. In Des Moines, one such fan flung a bat on stage to which Ozzy took to the next level. The winged mammal was stunned by the lights and the toss, so it was motionless. Thinking it was rubber, Ozzy picked it up and bit into it, and knew immediately something was very, very wrong.
Ozzy said in his memoirs, “For a start, my mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid, with the worst aftertaste you could ever imagine. I could feel it staining my teeth and running down my chin. Then the head in my mouth twitched.”
He was rushed to the hospital for rabies shots, the media caught word of the incident and the rest is history. The publicity thrust the tour into front page news, which led to the tour being banned from Boston to Baton Rouge, including Las Vegas.
