Classic rock reunion tours can get pretty complicated, especially when it involves which incarnation of the lineup gets to use the band name. As we’ve seen through the Beach Boys and Guns N’ Roses, these matters are tricky, even lawsuit-inducing. The latest example is “Centerfold” rockers J. Geils Band, who just announced a summer tour sans their namesake guitarist, John Geils.
So where’s Geils? A release from the group explains it has to do with a legal dispute with its label, and it seems Geils’ loyalty lies with Francesca Records: “The band is challenging Francesca Records’ baseless claim to ownership and control of the rights to the name ‘J. Geils Band.’ Unfortunately, John Geils’ decision to align with Francesca Records has hindered a working relationship with The J. Geils Band.”
Unlike acts like Journey and Yes, however, J. Geils Band hasn’t lost its charismatic frontman for the tour. Singer Peter Wolf is on board, as are original members Magic Dick (harmonica), Danny Klein (bass) and Seth Justman (keyboards).
The Houseparty tour kicks off August 25th at the New York State Fair and continues through the Northeast, with more dates expected to be announced soon.
