Madonna’s ‘Dress You Up’ Was Officially Deemed ‘Filthy’ By Parents In 1985

Everybody remembers Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” album. Do you know what the last single off of it was?

“Dress You Up”!

The song was produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic and even features a guitar solo from him in the song! Rodgers had just produced David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” a few years earlier. His success with Bowie was the reason why Warner Bros. tapped Rodgers to help Madonna with her sophomore album.

In fact, Rodgers’ former Chic bandmates Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson appear on several songs on Like A Virgin, playing bass and drums respectively. You could say the album was very cheeky

“Dress You Up” almost wasn’t included on the album because of how late it was submitted by songwriters Andrea LaRusso and Peggy Stanziale, but Madonna really liked the lyrics.

While Madonna loved the lyrics, some parents groups — surprise surprise — did not! The metaphors for fashion and sex weren’t subtle enough apparently. The song would go on to be included on Parents Music Resource Center’s “Filthy Fifteen” list, which also includes songs by Prince, Judas Priest and AC/DC.

Filthy by 1985 standards? Maybe. But how about 2017 standards?
