Beatles Wednesday: Billy Joel Covers ‘Back In The USSR’ In The USSR

If you’re gonna sing a song about Russia, what better place than Russia to do it?

In 1987, Billy Joel headed to the USSR to do a concert, which by the way, was the first live concert broadcast on the radio in the then Soviet Union.

During that show he performed The Beatles classic “Back In The USSR.”

There’s certain times when all the stars align and a band, a song and a crowd create an energy that you can cut with a knife.

Watch the video below and you’ll see that this was one of those times.

Another quick side note: Billy released this Beatles cover as a single, which was the first time he’d released a song that wasn’t his!
