Chicago was my first major market radio gig in 1982. I worked for Hot Hits WBBM-FM which would evolve into B96 eventually.
It was the ’80s so fun times all around. I remember when CPD closed down Rush street in front of Faces Bar for the Hawaiian Tropic swimsuit competition. It was packed with people even getting a view from nearby rooftops. The one thing in particular I remember was the after party inside Faces. Sitting at one bar in a corner by himself was Bill Cosby! I introduced myself and he was very gracious.
I also had the pleasure of hosting the “Best Fitting Designer Jean Contest” which was an annual event at P.S. Chicago on Division Street. People used to line up around the block to squeeze inside where you couldn’t even move! Steve Greer owned the place back then, a real nice guy.
I remember the thing to do on Thursday nights was to get together with friends and watch Cheers! SNL was pretty decent back then as well for Saturday night viewing before the bars. CBS Chicago had an in-house full time nurse for the employees, many of which got vitamin B shots to cure hangovers. We had some crazy parties back then when ratings would come out. At one party, someone who was a little tipsy may or may not have peed into the lobster tank at The Palm when it was located next to The Drake…
The ’80s were Rockin’ for sure.
The fashions of the ’80s were designer jeans, parachute pants, Member’s Only jackets, Chuck Taylors and gym gear was hot as well.
Hot Hits WBBM-FM was a high energy station with LOTS of jingles and music repetition like you’ve never heard! I did the Afternoon Show and we had “Chicago’s Top FIVE Hot Hits” countdown at the top of every hour and it was the same FIVE songs every single hour!
Throw on some ’80s gear and have a great time at Joe’s Live for some good music, drinks and BIG hair on Friday!
