This ‘U Can’t Touch This’ Sample Led To A Lawsuit

Probably MC Hammer’s most famous song, “U Can’t Touch This” appears on his 1990 album Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em.

That album sold 18 million copies, probably because “U Can’t Touch This” wasn’t initially released as a single but became a big hit, so you had to purchase the whole album to hear it.

The song also nabbed Hammer a slew of awards, including the Best R&B Song and a Best Rap Solo Performance awards at the GRAMMYs and the Best Rap Video and Best Dance Video awards at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards.

But! Do you know where Hammer sampled the main riff from?

“Super Freak” by Rick James.

Awkwardly, James wasn’t originally given credit on “U Can’t Touch This.” When James sued for copyright infringement, Hammer and his label quickly settled out of court, giving James a writing credit and royalties after the fact.
