Lars Ulrich On Metallica’s GRAMMYs Performance: James ‘Was Livid’

While Metallica’s instruments and Lady Gaga’s voice sounded amazing during their Sunday GRAMMY performance, one thing was missing: James Hetfield’s voice.

Hetfield spent half the show with his mic not working and a quarter of it sharing Lady Gaga’s mic. His mic did eventually get fixed, and he was able to end the show singin’.

At the very end, he kicked his mic stand over and threw his guitar to a guitar tech. He seemed angry, a fact that Lars Ulrich has since confirmed on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

“I haven’t seen him like that in 20 years… He was livid,” Ulrich said, speaking about James Hetfield. “He’s aged really well and he’s a pretty chill guy, but the first five or 10 minutes in that dressing room was not a lot of fun.”

Ulrich did find a silver lining, remarking, “A lot of people said, ‘at least it makes for good television.'”
