The Beatles Make Their Radio Debut

John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote most of the Beatles hit records. However the group did record some songs that had been written and recorded by other artists.

On December 11, 1961 Please Mr. Postman by The Marvelettes was the #1 song in America. The group was from a Detroit suburb and the song was the first #1 pop hit on a Motown label. The Carpenters covered the song in 1975 and topped the charts again.

It was March 8, 1962 that the Beatles made their debut on the BBC’s Teenagers Turn program.

One of the songs they performed was Please Mr. Postman
