1969’s Top Group Performs On The Ed Sullivan Show

This rock group originally got together at an El Cerrito, California high school. Their first recordings as The Blue Velvets took place in 1959. Five years later, they called themselves The Golliwogs.

Finally in 1967, the 4-man band chose Creedence Clearwater Revival as their name.

Susie Q. became CCR’s first hit record in 1968. They would chart 20 hit songs by 1976. Although the group never had a #1 hit, they did climb to the #2 spot five times.

Proud Mary was CCR’s biggest hit. It first appeared on the charts January 25th, 1969.

On March 9th, Creedence Clearwater Revival performed the song on the Ed Sullivan show.
