Today’s Throwback Thursday song was written by Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner.
Well, you probably know him better by his stage name, Sting.
“Spirits in the Material World” by The Police was nearly a Top Ten hit for the group, peaking at #11 on that charts in early 1982.
The song was part of the group’s “Ghosts In The Machine” album, which also featured the hit “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, that went to #2 on the US album charts and #1 across the pond in the UK.
Proving that inspiration can come at the weirdest times, Police lead singer Sting says that he came up with the song while sitting in the back of a truck while messing around with one of those mini Casio keyboards!
Even The Police broke up in 1987, Sting continues to play this song in concert to this day!
