Happy Birthday To The Voice Of Steppenwolf

Joachim Krauledat (John Kay) was born in East Germany on April 12, 1944.  When he was 23, he formed the rock quintet Steppenwolf in Los Angeles.

One year later the band made their national debut with Born To Be Wild.  It was a #2 hit in 1968 and was featured in the film Easy Rider.  Later that year, Magic Carpet Ride became their second hit and peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts.

By 1974, Steppenwolf placed 13 songs on the Top-100.

In 1972, John Kay charted his only solo hit.  The song had been a #1 country hit for Hank Snow in 1950.
