The British band Deep Purple formed in 1968. The original lineup: Rod Evans (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) and Nicky Simper (bass).
Success would come quickly. The band’s concert debut took place in Jastrup, Denmark on April 20th. Four months later, Deep Purple made their first appearance on the Billboard Top 100 charts.
Inspired by the burning of the Montreux Casino in 1971, Smoke On The Water became their biggest hit in 1973. Although they’ve charted just 9 hit singles, Deep Purple has sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
Hearing the band was never really a problem. A 1972 London concert earned them the title of “the globe’s loudest band” from the Guinness Book of World Records.
From their debut album in 1968, here’s Hush, Deep Purple’s first hit single.
