Have you discovered the Chicago Transit Authority Instagram account?
With all the hot weather that's taken hold over Chicago, we thought we'd share something from a much cooler time of year! This photo shows the "Free Santa Claus Bus" in mid-December, 1973 on State Street at Lake Street—well before our modern holiday train and bus became a Chicago tradition. The sign on the side offers free rides to State Street shopping on the Santa Claus Bus. Riders were sometimes treated to special performances while they rode, such as by an accordion player. #cta #cta70 #ctahistory #chicagohistory #statestreet #chicagoloop #buses #transit #publictransit #publictransport #haberdasher #santaclaus #santa #gmcbus #ctaholidaybus
As the CTA celebrates their 70th anniversary, they’ve been posting classic photos of their trains and buses. I love that stuff!
Want to see some in person? Drop by Daley Plaza today or tomorrow (7/10 & 7/11/2017). These three vintage buses are on display:
What a fun piece of history. Speaking of pieces, how hard do you think the pieces of gum are under the seats?!?
